Charity Profile: BACKPACK BUDDIES
FARMACIE's intention with its long table dinner series is to support individuals in our community who are up to something GREAT. Teaming up with organizations that work to strengthen our local food system is what makes us come alive and our collaboration with the ladies at Backpack Buddies has been just that. Backpack buddies, an initiative of the Community First Foundation, was founded 'because hunger doesn't take the weekend off'. Food insecurity is a real problem in Vancouver and many students in Vancouver’s inner city schools who rely heavily on free or reduced-priced lunches during the school week go home to meagre or no meals on the weekends. They are deprived of many essential nutrients and are at risk of developing serious health and learning complications. Child hunger is both a significant educational and social problem that has been an issue in our local communities for many years. Backpack buddies was born out of a solution to this problem as they use donated or surplus food, often from Quest Food Exchange and children and schools in more affluent areas, to fill backpacks and give to children at various schools. This #kidshelpingkids model enrols children from a young age into the issue of food security in their own backyards; hopefully, exposure to the inequality that exists in Vancouver will inspire them to create a better model for our future.
