Nourishing Connections

A community of food aware citizens coming together to inspire change in both our local and global communities.

FARMACIE 7.0 || Back To Where It All Began: UBC Farm

We hosted our first dinner in the Poplar Grove at the UBC Farm in the summer of 2013. So many memories exist for us between the lines of trees where we set our first table, and it's with so much excitement and joy that we're returning to the city's best kept urban-farming secret to honour Eden, share a meal, and appreciate the land for what it provides us: nourishment, connection, and the opportunity to create new and everlasting memories in such a special place.

Andrea Holfin from the UBC Farm, shared some insight into the depth and array of how the farm creates community and connection, and serves as a pillar for education and inspiration in the city:

'As a hub for community engagement and academic research, the UBC Farm has played a unique role in connecting people to each other, our land, and the delicious organic food that it produces. Each year, UBC Farm is thrilled to welcome visitors to the site to engage with their community programs such as:

  • Workshops
  • Indigenous initiatives
  • Children’s programs and summer camps
  • The Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture – an 8 month program designed to equip participants with farming skills
  • Student internships
  • Volunteer opportunities and many others!

During the growing season UBC Farm also offers Farm Markets on site and on campus. Every Saturday in the summer, the Farm  becomes a bustling site of activity with local artisans and crafters, live music, and organic UBC Farm produce. The Farm also offers a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program which provides weekly shares of produce for members.

Elder Larry Grant from Musqueam shared that the land where the UBC Farm has always been a place of spiritual growth and community building. it used to be a spot where their warriors would camp to train, fast, and seek visions. Here are some notes from when I met with Larry:  "Since time immemorial, this place has nurtured the physical, spiritual, mental and emotional growth of the people who stayed there. The land teaches us how small we are; it helps us to respect the frailty of our humanness. The earth shows us that it will take care of us, if we take care of it."'

On top of food, grows a stunning array of flowers that directly support the small scale farm. Used for personal or home bouquets to weddings and events, the natural beauty of these blooms will be a stunning and organic addition the Garden of Eden dinner.

Eden always dreamed of hosting a long table dinner on a farm; bringing her dream and her vision to life in a place that holds so much meaning for us in the Farmacie family is a true privilege - and we can't wait to welcome you to the table.
